"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!" - is my message for December.
I recently returned from a much needed and anticipated 'weekend break' with a group of friends on the Isle of Wight. Not the most exotic of destinations, yet nevertheless over half the kitchen staff (and therein lies a clue!) and guests managed to succumb to the Noro-virus infection currently plaguing the south coast.
Needless to say, most of us spent a large part of our time in bed, and came back feeling thoroughly drained rather than relaxed and refreshed.
A couple from our party will be coming for lunch this Sunday, and - concerned that I might reinfect them after their illness last weekend - I called to ask the doctor if I might still be infectious. She laughed and said "If they've already had that, they'll be immune to your germs". The quote "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!" is attributed to Friedrich Nietzsche, German Philosopher, 1844-1900.
A major blessing that came out of this episode was the way in which those who resisted the 'bug' rallied round to help their friends who were laid low. And, I'm sure that as time dulls the memory of the disappointment, it'll be yet another memory to bind our little group of friends closer as we laugh and reminisce about "That dreadful weekend when we all got the lurgy".
I recently came across an "out of copyright" book "Happiness" by Frederick S Attwood, published in 1923. To read what he had to say about adversity, visit the December 2007 article on our website. The language isn't modern, but it has a beauty of its own, and the sentiment is equally valid 80+ years after it was published.
